31

Aging is a privilege,

Some don’t get the chance.

Why is it then,

When I catch a glimpse,

Of one too many wrinkles,

Or a stray silver hair,

My brain goes into overdrive

Searching for something…

Anything to wind back the clock.

But only for my appearance,

I have no real desire to go back.

When I was 21 I was lost and lonely,

Now I am 31 I am for the most part, very happy.

So, if I am happier now,

Then I was back then

Why does my brain think I want to go back?

I am so vain

I think Carly Simon is singing about me

I am so vain

I think my worth is my youth

No.

I have been indoctrinated and so have you!

Age is a problem,

Only the beauty industry can solve.

Youth is the answer,

No matter the question.

Because you are worth it!

But not as you are.

You must change with the seasons

To avoid faux pas.

God forbid you are passe,

The goal is to be chic.

To reach the goal is not so easy

Someone keeps moving the posts.

Chic is reserved for the elite,

For us it stays out of reach.

I want off this crazy train,

I request to be de-programmed.

There is no winner in this game

Of who can age backwards?

I won’t go back to 21,

I have learned too much since then.

I don’t want to chase the unattainable,

I would rather wrinkle.
